Killed Market by editing build.prop - 7" Cap

Postby Whitebeam » January 9th, 2012, 11:14 pm

Blast! I've now completely killed my access to Market on my 7" Capacitative. Is there any way to recover?

The Story:

I bought the Scroll new in the middle of last year. Out of the box Market worked quite well once I had learned to find it by searching the machine.

Last week I wanted to get my Calendar synching with that on my Google account. I read that the latest firmware update on the SO website fixed the problem with this, so downloaded it and did a factory reset on the box. So far so good, calendar synched and I rebuilt the machine. There were just a couple of apps that I couldn't get from the Market now (Tesco Groceries amoungst them). To try to restore this access I (foolishly it seems) played about with build.prop based on the tutorial on here and on some other references on the web. Rather than the version on here, I attempted to spoof another model of phone that implemented 2.3.1 version on the Scroll. Alas all I now get from Market is 'No matching content'. I have tried:

1) Reloading the firmware update (clean build.prop), clearing cache and doing a factory restore.
2) Pasting the first section of the V3 build.prop from the tutorial into the phone (using adb over USB)
3) 1) plus logging into Google with a brand new shiney Google account.

To no avail. Attempt 2) above just got me into a boot loop.

How does Market differentiate between my Scroll as was after the firmware update and my scroll now (after a fresh firmware update and factory restore)?

Can anyone please help suggest a fix that will get me back in touch with the apps I have paid for (and get me back all of the other Apps I had?

Hi Peter & welcome to the forum

1) Reloading the firmware update (clean build.prop), clearing cache and doing a factory restore.
2) Pasting the first section of the V3 build.prop from the tutorial into the phone (using adb over USB)
3) 1) plus logging into Google with a brand new shiney Google account.

No. 2 & 3 won't help (as you have found out) but no. 1 should have worked.

The one thing that springs to mind is that, when you reloaded the firmware update, it did not put the build.prop back - as it could be possible if the OS thinks the (messed up) build.prop is more current than the one in the update (ie it will not overwrite, what it thinks to be a newer version)

If you use a file explorer & go into system/ and long press on build.prop (then scroll down) and press 'view as text' you will be able to see wheather it's still the old one or not.

If it is still the messed up one, you need to manually put the correct one back. give me a shout if you need help with that.

It resolved itself at 01:30 this morning (yawn). I reloaded, cleared, facory restored for the umpteenth time and - thank goodness - Market loaded ok again!

I still don't have access to a couple of apps that I had pre firmware update. Please would someone be able to post the initial section of the build.prop from a 7" Capacitative Scroll that has not had its firmware updated with the May 2011 update? I'd love to know what has changed.

Glad its sorted,

I would give you a copy of the build.prop, but I don't have one. Until someone uploads a copy, you could always try sideloading the apps you want.

I haven't yet been able to find a source of the Tesco Grocery shopping app that I would trust. Is there any way of persuading Market to download an apk to my PC? I have the SDK loaded.

Just downloaded the Tesco app for you from google market to my phone & popped it my Dropbox. It should be good to go, as it's from the official market,
