Scroll Essential USB adaptor type

Postby Trashcooky » January 4th, 2012, 9:58 pm

Hello,

I am a newbie silver surfer with a Scroll essentials with only one mini usb socket which I got a few days ago .
I also bought a 7" (scroll type) case with USB keyboard but which has a full size USB male connection on the keyboard. (The Scroll has mini USB)

I have tried 2 brand new mini usb male (5pin) to standard USB female adaptors (4pin) but I cannot get the scroll to recognise the keyboard or any other type of USB device - not even flash memory.

The same USB keyboard works OK on my Windows PC and curiously I am able to connect the Scroll to my Windows PC OK - where the scroll is recognised as a mass storage device and I can tranfer files back and forth OK. (Using the supplied mini usb - full usb cable)

It seems the Scroll is not supplying any power through its USB socket when I plug the keyboard into it - which means either the Scroll USB circuitry is duff or something is wrong with both my brand new usb adaptors.

Questions:
1. Has anyone else had this problem? (and if so what did they do to solve it)
2. Is a specialist USB adaptor other than a 5 pin mini male to 4 pin standard USB female needed - as I have tried 2 brand new ones without any success.
Lastly:
When I check notifications SCSI is shown as unavailable and mount SCSI does not work because presumably no device is seen.

Your help would be most graciously appreciated. :)

Hi Trashcooky,

Firstly, Ditto! I am also a newbie, and I have exactly the same issue! Keyboard works in PC & Xbox, and tablet talks to PC. I raised pretty much the same question on this forum too (see NIKKAI L16BT) here on December 30th.... sadly for me nobody bothered to take the time to reply to me...

Anyway, I have exctly the same issue as you do. I bought my Scroll essential from Amazon, with their recommended keyboard/wallet. I bought the USB adaptor from Maplins, in store, after seeking their advice, but it din't work and when I went back with it on Monday, they were quite frankly worse than useless! So, I got my money back and ordered the "recommended" one from amazon, which arrived today..... but still won't work.

I also emailed Storage options technical support yesterday, who's only response was along the lines of "you need to be using the official SOKPAD... as this is already fitted with a mini USB connector"...

I am now going to return the keyboard/wallet & the USB adaptor, get my money back, and buy a SOKPAD.

Sorry if this doesn't help, but hey, at least you got a reply!

Best regards.

I've just received a Scroll Essential and a case with integrated USB keyboard (mini USB) as recommended by other Scroll users on Amazon. However, the keyboard does not function and is not registering as an input device in Settings.

There is only one USB port on the Scroll Essential (a mini USB). Can anyone offer any assistance?

I accessed the Android Marketplace easily enough via the Marketplace Widget!!!!!

Thanks in advance

Hi everyone, thanks for getting together on this problem with Scroll essentials. I did wonder in my case if it was just the fact that I needed a really full charge on the Scroll (like when on a full PC you overload the PSU then USB devices fail to workl or be recognised.) but even when I took the Scroll hot of charge it wouldn't even recognise a flash drive. I also used 2 brand new mini USB adaptors (one gold pinned from Maplin) but it seems the Scroll was not supplying any power to the USB socket. I emailed Storage options who asked me to test my my keyboard on another PC which I did and it works OK (so I am keeping the Keyboard case.) Storage Options suggested to me that there may be a fault with the USB socket not supplying power and after 3 emails to them on the subject and trying different tests they advised me to contact the supplier (Amazon). I have sent my Tablet back and am currently waiting confirmation from Amazon about a refund. On reflection, I think I will upgrade and purchase the Scroll Excell which has a better spec and also does support Flash and comes with BBC iplayer pre-installed. Unfortunately, it costs twice as much as the Scroll Essentials. The price of which is going up and down like a Yo Yo on Amazon at the present time.
I see that both the Essentials and the Excell are about £20.00 more expensive on Amazon than they are direct from Stotage Options at this time so I might wait for Amamzon to drop the price - which they usually do after a week or so. Regarding the comment about accessing the market using the widget - this worked fine for me too.

Hi Trashcooky,

As you know I had the same problem.... which was ultimately resolved by purchasing the genuine SOKPAD! Yes, it worked, just plugged it in and away it went...

Good luck with the Excel!

Re: previous post. Just to confirm, are you suggesting the genuine SOKPAD works with the Scroll Essential? From where did you purchase?

Hi Guys

The problem is with the usb interface - you need to buy a USB type A Female to B Male Mini 5Pin Converter Adapter with OTG functionality. I paid £1.99 for mine on a well known aution site and it works perfectly with my Scroll Essential!

Happy Days!

Thanks SpoonRunner,
Just to be clear, are you saying that the OTG (On The GO) adaptor has a special significance - over an ordinary 5 pin Male mini usb to 4 pin Female USB adaptor? Is it a different beast all together i.e does OTG mean the connections are different?

Thanks.
