ADB Not Detecting Excel (USB issue?)

Postby Astro » January 27th, 2012, 5:00 pm

It's not desperatley urgent that I get this sorted out, but I am having difficulty in getting ADB to detect my Excel.

I'd like to get Clockworkmod installed so that I can create a recovery file before going on to start tweaking, but without ADB recognising the Excel, I'm a bit stumped.

I've downloaded and installed 'android-sdk-windows' (and Java), added the SDK platforms and all subfiles, for 2.1 (API 7) to 4.0.3 (API 15) plus all the SDK Tools, SDK Platform-Tools and Extras (inc USB driver package and @Charlies modded 'android_winusb.inf' file). I've also installed Eclipse in case it was needed.

When I've got an Android Virtual Device running, I can see it with the 'adb devices' command, but I can't see the Excel connected via USB. The 'adb usb' command returns the following: 'error: device not found'

I've tried just about every which way I can think of to get connected, debugging on and off; and USB storage on / off, but nothing seems to work.

It's all installed at: C:\android-sdk-windows and my OS in Win7 64bit. I've also tried it on XP 32 bit and have exactly the same issue.

My feeling is that it's a USB recognition issue, maybe, I'm missing something in: C:\android-sdk-windows\extras\google\usb_driver - the files in here are:
amd64 (folder) (courtesy of @blueeagle)
i386 (folder)
lg (folder) (courtesy of @blueeagle)
android_test.inf (courtesy of @blueeagle)
android_usb.inf (courtesy of @blueeagle)
android_winusb.inf (@Charlie's version)
android_winusb2.inf (courtesy of @blueeagle)
androidwinusb86.cat
androidwinusba64.cat
source.properties

Or, maybe, I've got an incorrect setting on the Excel.

Any advice would be most welcome.

Thanks

Do you had debugging on?

settings>applications>development> and debugging has a green tick in the box.

Also have you put the android_winusb.inf in the correct place?

If you have done both of these, go to Device manager in windows and right click on the device with the yellow ! next to it (make sure the excel is plugged into the usb at the time) and select update drive and chose 'own path' and direct it to the folder where the android_winusb.inf is (which must be in the sdk - you_path_ to_SDK >extras>google>usb_driver>

in the usb_driver folder there should be 2 folders and 5 files (including the android_winusb.inf ) - take the other usbxxxx.inf files out

EDIT:- you need to open a command window in the folder C:\android-sdk-windows>platform-tools> for ADB to work

If this is your path to platform-tools is C:\android-sdk-windows

Thanks @Charlie - Debugging is on and 'android_winusb.inf' is in: C:\android-sdk-windows\extras\google\usb_driver.

I'll check out the rest of your 'instructions' and report back.

Thanks

@Charlie - It worked, the Excel is detected!

How easy was that? I would have struggled for ages without your help.

Thank you.

GREAT NEWS! :D

Glad you got it sorted - Getting connected to ADB for the 1st time can be a right PITA - I've been through all that messing about and hair pulling out too, when I first tried out ADB.

P.S. The command ADB logcat lists out all that is going on in the device (live) - also if you do the command ADB lolcat - that does the same thing, I think it was put in by the devs for a joke - lolcat, get it?

@Chatlie - Thanks again and for the supplemental info.

I get it... those devs are crazy cats and, obviously, they need to get out more!

Hi, I know this is an old post but I have a clients excel scrollable tablet here and I can't get adb or eclipse to see it (I've followed the instructions above). The original poster refers to android_winusb.inf (@Charlie's version) - where do I find this?
