Scroll Excel (stock) DPI changes?

Postby Trashcooky » April 4th, 2012, 8:15 pm

I have read several posts on the forum about big improvements being noticed when changing the Excel's dpi and I noted that in one of the build.props that have been linked to the forum that this line is added to the Excel build.prop "Additional build properties" : ro.sf.lcd_density=120 also I note that the dalvik has been doubled from the stock build prop of 32 to dalvik.vm.heapsize=64m which some members have reported increases the Excel's gaming smoothness.
This may only be a small step for android but will be a giant leap for me... (excuse the corny  )
On the understanding from the how to's that one needs to ensure that the build.prop file properties must have
the permissions of rwx r-- r-- is this as easy as just editing the build prop (saving original as old) replacing build.prop with the edited one - and is it worth it?

Thanks for your help on this. :)

hi trashcooky if you are editing yourself please be aware that you can get in a bootloop if your edits are not compliant with device and would need to push the original back via adb
you can just put one of charlies on as you know it works
just doing the two you mentioned should not cause probs (no typo's)
& theres help here on the forum
worst case you would have to use livesuite to upgrade to ics
BTW you do have CWM5?

@tc- changing density also has an affect on what apps will be shown as compatible on play store ;)

If a device has large memory, such as 1gb or 512mb, it is good to increase the heapsize, i think what it basicly does is allow apps to use bigger cache memory, but obviously we dont want to go stupid and have a heapsize of 256mb

Also, reducing the Dots Per Inch (DPI) makes the images render smaller and of a higher visual quality.

WARNING If you change the DPI in ICS to anything other than 120, you will generaly find yourself in a bootloop.

Gingerbread isnt so bad, because that was never designed for tablets, although, again, changing it can cause bootloops, you can usualy reduce the DPI of the STOCK Gingerbread OS to 100 if you wanted, but it would be near impossible to read the text and what not. Dont go less than 140 ;)

You can change the build.prop without worrying about setting new permissions for it.

PS, What Charlie said aswell :D

I sincerely thank you all for your useful and informative comments. I have taken it all on-board.
Yes I do have CWM5 and have been studying android SDK on Win 7 32bit, which I have been playing with to familiarise myself to it. I also have titanium backup and Super User installed on my Excel.

I am still very cautious and will only attempt tweaking if there are any discerned or proven benefits to be gained.
From your kind explanations that seems dubious, so I will probably keep the Excel stock, but keep saving the pennies out of my pension for the Extreme.

It's funny really because I have raised many Windows PC's from the dead with full confidence but I lack the confidence (yet) to go for it with android unless the rewards are unquestionable.

Thank you all very much once again. :)

if you cant get the apps you want on the stock Excel then that is the time to jump either to ICS or just build.prop i was lucy to have had a cheap phone that i started playing around with to give me some confidence in tweaking stuff but i still have lots to learn just remember you cant brick the allwinnercpu as long as livesuite can see it maybe you should test if you can get livesuite to that stage

Thanks Mitre, I have got all the necessary downloads including livesuit.
I have yet to make the full back-up but once I get round to this I may well get a bit bolder. As far as apps go I must be easily satisfied cause I have got many I can't get direct from Google play by sideloading them. Although I treat my Excel mostly as a games machine and my Desktop PC for serious stuff, I would still feel like I'd had my legs cut of if I screwed the Excel up. I use the Excel a lot for watching the news in my bedroom whilst shaving and getting dressed in the mornings. With the sound piped through aux on a portable radio it makes a very satisfactory set-up also using a cheap book-stand for a semi-upright viewing angle. The icing on the cake would be lip-sync sorted.
