Oh and the "boot.img" contains the kernel+ram-disk" the ram-disk can be edited once decompiled from the boot.img.
It will decompile to a "ram-disk" folder, open that up and then you have files you can edit. (Modify these files without fully understanding what does what will inevitably soft brick your tablet if you flash it)

The kernel cannot be edited so easy, as explained in the previous post.

Thanks for the post.

At first it did confuse me, I watched a video on one of the links you posted which helped clear things up to what I understand which is this:

A rom is basically an image of a tablet that someone has created. By flashing a ROM that someone else made takes out the hard work. Like a theme but much more in depth in the way that the back end and system is modified as well.

So is a ROM just like kinda what I've done with my extreme, meaning I have kept the standard ICS build (which most people want it seems), but I've removed the bloat, contacts, phone, browser, ebuyer thing etc. I've then added Apex Launcher, Simple Text, Beautiful Widgets resulting with something like this (I've not finished as of yet). Something like this http://db.tt/QALjmdV5, (this is a screenshot of my One X).

Is making a backup of this once I've done it not more or less a ROM?

EDIT: Silly work PC crashed mid post!

A little helpe please guys. I've got the two backups I made with the directions in this thread. I have the nand files backed up and I also have a clockwork backup.

I've tried to put these files on the internal card and also the external one and tried to recover using clockwork but it keeps saying no files found.

What is it I am doing wrong?

Use an external sdcard with Clockworkmod Recovery.
The "backup" will be in a folder called "clockworkmod" under another folder called "backup" it will be dated
Example... "2012.05.14.21:36"

Check that the files are like so... If not then maybe an issue with CWM.

I figured it would be something like that, I have a clockwork\backup\2012-05-09.20.10.53 with boot/bootloader/cache/ext4/data/ext4/nandroid.md5/recovery and system.ext4 and I put the clockwordmod folder in the lost.dir folder on the card, but still it said no files.

I also put your 4.0.4 beta 3 and actually managed to flash that as well :)

Quick question - I am regularly updating with Suggy's new builds and last night I did something and so I am gonna re-flash the latest build. I play a game called block puzzler (am addicted), I am quite far in to the game, is there anyway to pull the saved bit of the game out so when I format and flash I can put it back after?

Ta!

If you stick with my rom, there should be no need to wipe flash wipe flash...
You can use an app called titatanium backup > https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... ckup&hl=en

This backs up all your apps, you can even sync to dropbox with the premium version.

Flawless

I love it and use it ALL THE TIME since I change ROMs periodically and I love how it literally just takes a "snaphot" of your entire phone and just puts all your apps and settings back the way it was before you did anything! :)

You can also do an advanced restore in CWM just to restore your data if you wish, it sometimes can cause FC but most of the time it works fine. Best to use Titanium i say. Just make sure the backup is on your "EXTERNAL" Sdcard

Thanks for the quick reply Suggsy. I opted for Titanium Backup, backed up the wifi and account settings, also the game file. Installing your RC1 as I type :)

I did have a problem with the link you gave, I had to go in the play store from the tab and install it that way for some reason.

Soooooo many backups!!!

...ok will do, good advice. Must say the difference in the .7 beta I think was on (camping last week down in the South West so couldn't do anything!), to RC1 is insane! Not tested fully, but just the speed and the responce is amazing.

I am guessing now that you will release the new version tonight

Oh, and the game actually had a backup to SD setting (grrrrr!). I supose I now have limited knowledge of Titanium Backup :)
