Not charging

Postby tomchance » January 9th, 2011, 7:49 am

I've found that after about half a day the charger stopped working... I plug it in and nothing happens.

Now after a few days it has stopped charging off the USB as well... my Scroll is down to 5% battery and when I plug the USB it stays on (battery symbol shows the little lightning bolt) but it doesn't show any signs of charging. I left it connected to a laptop overnight and... no charge.

Has anyone else had this? Any tips? Or is this a hardware fault?

I would try a factory Reset while you have enough power to do so (Keep the USB plugged in)

If that fails to fix it, I would sent it back

My USB doesnt charge it very much, enough to allow me constant use but not to charge the battery

I received a response from Storage Options, which amazes me:

"Unfortunately, we believe this is firmware issue rather than a hardware fault. Please continue to check the website for firmware updates with instructions."

Unless you have everything off whilst the scroll is plugged into usb there isn't enough current to charge and run simultaniously. Since the 500mA suppliable by USB is way below the 2A of the mains adapter...

If you use a modded PC power supply with a molex (5v&Ground) -> usb (Outer voltage pins) then the scroll can pull as much as it wants for charging (Depending on the PSU 5v rail specifications)

I have an external USB on my pc that is fed directly using that method, with the data pins going to the mobo (So I can run high current devices and still communicate with them)

Nice tips, definately handy to have a USB port with the same juice a charger has, might have to make one ;)
