Which USB devices have you managed to get working?

Are you using the correct USB port, ie the one on the right when you look at the side with the screen upwards. The handbook (which I think is the best I've ever had) shows the position.

anyone tried one of those mini usb Bluetooth dongles? Be nice to find a microUSB one so you don't need a cable hanging off but ah well

Just tried one of those out with the CM9 rom, not working.

Piers, from what I can see nothing is locked.
I suspect it may be a profile thing.
