Possible Extreme firmwares(equivalent ROM's)

Postby manorgate » May 15th, 2012, 1:24 pm

Not wanting to piss on the excellent work by Suggsy.....as a Yarvik 467 owner I came to this forum after searching for a working Play Store and "other enhancements"...seeing that Suggsy had an alternative ROM for the Yarvik he had, I did a little fishing and found the excellent SLatedroid forum covering the Allwiner A10 units circulating the globe.

One such developer is a guy called Christian Troy who has developed a firmware for the momo11, 907c and other A10 clones. Anyway I downloaded the 1.3 ROM (after seeing another Yarvik 467 owner do the same with success) and then had a working Play Store, Iplayer, Skype (yes video calling too) etc and the tablet ran just so much slicker. He has just released 1.4, with working support for Bluetooth dongles and GPS (I think). The guy knows his shit (so to speak) and is ultimately looking to build the excellent CM9 firmware onto the A10 series!!

Looking at the specs, the Yarvik and Scroll Extreme are identical (indeed I was about to buy the Scroll at 169 quid until ebuyer did their typical price yoyo). Look at the forum and try at your own risk!

Might be useful for some!

PS Suggsy, is this the one you were talking about?

I found 1.3v to be very good. The latest version of Skype video worked, and GTalk video too.

Older versions of Skype video work ok on the Extreme, so guess the Yarvik ones would too.

Hi, recently bought an Extreme (nice Tab, works well) but I'm disappointed about the lack of GPS or BlueTooth.
Piers - have you tried found this and does it work on the Extreme?
Thanks,
oldgit

I don't have an external GPS stick and the bluetooth dongle I have doesn't work, however my 3G stick does.

Hi Piers,
I'm not use to the Tab keyboard yet, so my post was kind of scrambled.
I also tried a USB B'Tooth stick without success, what I was really asking was if you'd tried the suggested 1.4(ROM?) which supposedly supports B'Tooth via USB......
Thanks,
oldgit

Hi oldgit :) and Piers,

I'm not sure what benefits the 1.4 version of rom has over the CM9 that a lot of people are upgrading to (see post in the general discussions) but it does also support:

Features

* Bluetooth USB dongle support (btusb and ath3k)
* USB GPS support (cp210x and pl2303)
* Xbox 360 gamepad support (xpad)
* PS3 USB gamepad support (hid-sony)
* Generic / chinese (Pantherlord / GreenAsia) gamepads support (hid-pl and hid-gaff)
* OpenVPN support (tun)
* NTFS and ExFat support
* Veno congestion control algorithm

All i'm thinking is that this post was started back in May and CM9 has gone through a few revisions since then so is the 1.4 rom still supported?

I haven't used the 1.4 ROM since it came out and have been using the nightly CM9 builds instead. pwn3d 1.4 is no longer supported I think.

Many thanks Piers and Stu,
As you may have guessed, I'm new to this game on the Scroll Tabs.
I got bitten a few months ago when I picked up a cheap Hannspad and eventually managed to flash it (after many others) with the TeamDRH ICS Beta.
http://www.slatedroid.com/topic/30821-rom210412-teamdrhs-ics-rom/
After using ICS I decided earlier versions of Android (and other custom ROMs) simply didn't cut it.
But skimming through these forum posts give the impression that using NVFlash to backup/restore a Tab is a doddle compared to using ADB, Livesuit and the other stuff mentioned.

The best thing going for the Hannspad was the SlateDroid forum, they had loads of guides (some outdated but useful) on how to backup/restore using NVFlash/CWM and to install custom ROMs.

But most importantly if you didn't screw up the bootloader you could easily get back to stock ROM using the published update.zip's and then let the Tab auto update to the latest Hannspree ROM via wi-fi.

I'm probably (I hope) going to be proved wrong, but so far I can't find a definitive guide that tells you how to:

1. Backup your existing ROM for safe keeping
2. Return your Tab to stock - 'out of box' state

As an old electronics engineer it's difficult learning new tricks, but I like to know what I'm doing (program wise) - simply following instructions is easy - until things go wrong, then a bit of knowledge comes in useful ;)

I'll read, re-read and trawl through Suggsy's, Piers and KLRichards 'Im giving up.....' thread and eventually bite the bullet to try ICS 4.0.4 and/or CM9.

Thanks again for the info,
oldgit
