Bt connection

Postby djh85 » July 12th, 2012, 6:10 pm

I have a bt total broadband connection with 10gb a month allowance. Am I correct in saying Bt fon and Bt openzone do not count towards to your usage. Used Fon and openzone recently most impressed. Though they seem to taken over my home hub settings. Have to log on using my Bt username and password not always but sometimes. My home hub seems to have forgotten my forgot setup iput on it and I need to key it in paaword details. Noticed that
Bt openzone on my tablet has H on it does that mean home. Connections are fine. Anybody else use btfon or openzone. is this normal.

Thanks

Dave

I don't know what the H means on your BT account (is it Homehub ) because I am on Sky Unlimited, but I would be very wary thinking your Openzone doesn't count toward you monthly usage as I would be very surprised if it doesn't. With broadband deals there is usually no such thing as a free lunch and many ISP's will allow you to go over your monthly limit once or twice and then automatically switch you to the next higher package - ad infinitum - so be careful you don't suddenly find your service is costing you a lot more than you bargained for.

10Gb is not very much at all, especially for a month. If you start streaming video too much - i.e. YouTube or TV Catchup, or BBC iplayer you will very quickly exceed your 10Gb. As I said I am not a BT customer so I can't be certain but I am old enough in the tooth to be wary. Make sure you have read and fully understand the terms of your account as they all hide lots in the masses of small print which you have agreed to.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

I use a HomeHub 3 and yes the H is to differentiate the BTOpenzone AP from a "managed" Openzone AP, i.e. it is as Trashcooky mentions a "Home" variant of the service, rather than one where BT Install and manage an AP.

I can see no reason to connect to the BT Fon or BTOpenzone-H networks whilst you are at home and in range therefore of your own (secure) WiFi AP other than for testing. I think there is a session limit on the Fon and Openzone services and in any case the speed will be limited as only a small proportion of your Total Broadband bandwidth can be used by these services.

It looks like your problem is that the tablet is connecting to the Open Network rather than the secure one, I suggest you force a connect to the secure network and make sure you have input the Passphrase and the Tab has remembered it then tell it to "Forget" the other two networks.

I don't know if they aggregate your "roaming" monthly usage with the "at home" usage so if you are looking for a way to "extend" your monthly allowance you will need to read and understand the Ts&Cs. I think if you exceed the monthly allowance more than once they simply charge by the Gb rather than "upping" your package.

Thanks for that info Bob. Back to normal now connecting through my Bt hub. As you said Bt fon and Openzone are a lot slower. Definetly not to be used at home.
