Cloud printing from Scroll Extreme

Postby dustytyke » July 16th, 2012, 7:19 am

By some fluke (being a complete novice in this tablet game) I've managed to get my Scroll Extreme to 'talk' to one of my PC's printers via Google Cloud. I've successfully sent the 'test' page to the printer and, lo and behold, it's printed out ! However, I don't have the faintest idea how to get any other documents, pictures, etc, on my tablet into the print list so I can send them to the printer. There appears to be no guidance whatsoever as to how this can be achieved. Anyone any suggestions ? Dustytyke.

Hi and well done for getting so far that the 'test' page came out. If your printer natively supports Cloud print then you need only to make sure that you have compatible apps on your tablet. However, if your printer is 'pre-Cloud' you will have to make sure a PC is running which has a connection to that printer, then you effectively run a cloud print server program on the PC. Chrome can be such a server but that's getting into details.

I think this page will help you a lot :)

oh, and this one:

http://www.google.com/landing/cloudprint/

It looks like Printershare or Easyprint on your tablet would be a good choice, then Cloud Print for Windows on your PC if required.

I have an Epson BX610FW inkjet which is pre-Cloud, but it's connected to my wifi and I have a small server pc running all the time. Also certain printer manufacturers have their own apps on the Market - Epson have 'Epson Iprint' which is surprisingly useful - you can print from other apps to iPrint, which then prints on your local Wifi printer or can save to Google Docs/Drive. It will also scan. Granted, it's not natively cloud but it can be used in combination with the other apps above.

Last week was a key event for me - I needed to send a signed document with a cover letter by post, so I stood in front of my printer with my Android phone, wrote the cover letter on the phone in Google Docs, sent it immediately to print from there to my printer, then put the signed document into the scanner and scanned it with my phone. Effectively a full document preparation using just my phone.

Now I'm starting to ramble a bit, but wouldn't it be cool if Google Contacts integrated with Google Documents so you could just insert a contact address when writing a letter?

Thanks for the response - I was beginning to think that I was the only one interested in Cloud Printing ! I've stumbled my way through all the preliminary stuff already. I don't have a printer that natively supports Cloud - it's a 'classic' Brother MFC-465CN but I somehow managed to get it listed in the Cloud Print app on my Scroll Extreme; there is there a 'test' page and I simply chose my Brother printer, as listed, then clicked on the 'Print' button. By some sort of magic the 'test' page printed out, in full colour. I'm still baffled as to how this happened as neither my printer nor my PC are wireless ! The only wireless appliance I have is my Scroll Extreme and I can't fathom out how the 'test' page got across to the Brother printer ! There most be some sort of black magic art at work here ! Having established that my Cloud Print app on my Scroll Extreme CAN 'talk' to my non-Cloud printer, what I now need to know sounds like something astoundingly simple and straightforward: just HOW do I get another doc or picture stored on my Scroll into the Cloud Print app ? I manage to get to something labelled "Upload file...." but clicking on it simply shows a 'list' (i.e. a list of one) printers - i.e. my non-Cloud Brother. There just doesn't seem to be any way of choosing a file from other parts of my Scroll Extreme and getting it listed in the Cloud Print app for onward transmission to my printer. The 'test' page worked - but I can't get anything to take its place to be sent for printing.

Android apps don't appear to have a "Print" option so I expect you will print from an app using "share" in some way. Assuming you have the Cloud Printing app on the Extreme does it appear when you "share" a document, page, or whatever from the app you are viewing with.

This is not something I have tried and tested just the only way I can see printing working from a device that doesn't have any real concept of an attached printer.

The problem may well resolve itself by default as my Brother printer decided to develop a terminal paper feed fault so I've nnow ordered a Cloud compatible wifi printer to replace it. Let's see what hhappens when I endeavour to Cloud print to this one from my Scroll Extreme. thank you all for your advice.
