BBC I Player

Postby rinosanti » August 14th, 2012, 4:04 pm

I have just bought the Scroll and like it very much however, I am trying to open up the BBC I player to view some of the Olympics but, I keep getting asked for Adodbe Flashplayer, which has already been installed on my Scroll.
For some reason I can not open BBC I Player even though I have Adobe Flashplayer - has any one any suggestions.

Thanks very much.

Hi rinosanti and welcome. What model Scroll have you bought?

What I mean is does it have a model name or model number like Excel or Essential?
Then we can see what your possibilities with it are.
There are many 7" tablets from Storage Options all now running ICS android 4 but you need to know exactly what tablet yours is before you can begin to get the best from it.

OK that's great news, you have got a decent bit of kit.

From your description about the Flash required notice, I am guessing you are trying to use iplayer through a browser and not through the iplayer android app? This Flash required warning happens because iplayer in a browser is looking for a version of Flash which android cannot support. Or to put it another way you can't (usually) access iplayer this way any more and you need to use the android app.
( I say usually because this is sometimes OS dependant i.e. android Gingerbread 2.3.4 used to work with iplayer in a browser)

Unfortunately, Google have not issued a license for the Excel and as a consequence when you visit the Google play store - Google interrogate your tablet to see what it is and then show you only the apps which they think are compatible with your device.

As the Scroll Excel is not Google licensed what you can access on the play store is limited to pretty much the basic stuff and some apps will not be available to you through the play store even though they will work OK on the Excel.
This is why Storage Options preload alternative app stores on the tablet which may or may not get you what you want.

To overcome this restriction, some Excel owners change their stock OS to a custom one which fools Google play into thinking the Excel is a Google licensed Samsung device which then gives you greater access to more apps.

Now first of all - do you have the BBC iplayer app installed? it is available here: https://play.google.com/store/search?q=bbc+iplayer but if you can't access it from this link then try the alternative app stores.

Hopefully it is as simple as that, however many Excel owners have reported lip-sync issues when using BBC iplayer but I don't know how well it does on the ICS stock ROM as I am using a custom rom on my Excel.

Let us know how you get on.

Great news.
You might also be interested in ITV player: http://tinyurl.com/8kvkpyx although it doesn't work for some people who complain of jerky operation. Also a very useful app if you use your Excel to watch TV is TV Catchup which you can download here: http://static.tvcatchup.com/android/TVC_0_40.apk

Happy hunting. :D

Last night (22nd Sept) I went to use BBC iplayer and I got a screen telling me it is now BBC Media player and I needed an additional download for BBC iplayer to function.

I installed the download and everything was available again but with an updated interface.
I tried watching a catchup of Dr Who and noticed a degradation of graphics which pixelate badly on fast motion but the screen remains very sharp on slower or semi-stationary action shots.

I can only assume this must be some sort of streaming display algorithm BBC are using as the previous buffering frame catch-up I used to occasionally get seems to have been replaced by this occasional pixelation.

I am now on Jellybean with my Excel but I don't think this has anything to do with it ?
