@benjyz I think Suggsy89 is refering to these instructions : viewtopic.php?f=58&t=2448&hilit=how+to+dump+your+firmware I know this is listed for the Extreme but I am sure the commands are the same for the Excel as you are simply pulling the information out of the tablet.

If you don't know anything about adb or sdk then have a look here to get you started: viewtopic.php?f=20&t=2757
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

That command will push...
to dump do...
dd if=dev/block/nanda of=mnt/sdcard/nanda.img

That will dump nanda to sdcard.. the external storage... (If I remember correctly)

Do the same for nand blocks up to "g"

Thanks for the help @Suggsy89,
But just so am crystal clear on the instructions; I need to run the same command but change the nanda part i.e. (nandb, nandc etc til I get to g). That's fine, but where does the CWM come in? and when/where do I install it from?

yeah if you follow that in adb, that will dump your current firmware in "blocks"
cwm is a recovery program that you can use to backup your firmware and restore if things go tits up
have a look here... second post down viewtopic.php?f=55&t=2155
use that to install cwm, then do a backup if you can... then dump the firmware

Okay,
So I ran the "CWM Recovery Script Scroll Excel Android 4.bat" and got the following message (please see attachment). Then, when I "press any key to continue" it just goes back to the original install screen. Am guessing that's not what was supposed to have happened right?
I think the problem is definitely the installation of busybox that I tried to do and then repair. If only I knew how to reinstall it properly, maybe that would sort it out?
You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.

Okay, so in my haste I forgot to mention that despite the error message I received. I was still able to boot into the CWM-based Recovery Mode and run a backup to internal sdcard, to which I got the following response:
Code: Select all
CWM-based Recovery v5.5.0.4
SD Card space free: 5724MB
Backing up boot image...
Backing up recovery image....
Backing up system....
Backing up data....
No /sdcard/.android_secure found. Skipping backup of applications on external storage.
Backing up cache...
No sd-ext found. skipping backup of sd-ext.
Generating md5 sum...
Backup complete!

I've checked my external sdcard and there is now a folder named clockworkmod (/mnt/extsd/clockwordmod/backup/2012-08-22.16.19.34) which contais the following files:
  • boot.img 32.00Mb |-rw
  • cache.ext4.tar 46.00Kb|-rw
  • data.ext4.tar 2.00Kb |-rw
  • nandroid.md5 237.00bytes |-rw
  • recovery.img 32.00Mb |-rw
  • system.ext4.tar 200.47Mb |-rw

So suggsy89, is this good or bad? should I proceed with dumping my current firmware? also i've seen an option for "Fix Permissions" in the advanced options should I try it out first?

you can try to use "fix permissions" i dont think it will have an affect though
if you can, i need, system, recovery, and boot files, may you upload them and send me a link to them ?
if so, ill build an update with the correct busybox and make sure it is symlinked, ill test it out for you aswell

best thing is to now dump the firmware via adb and "dd"
