Newbie questions about factory reset

Postby JoeGargery » September 5th, 2012, 6:37 am

Hi

(newbie question alert)

I have had a Scroll Extreme for a couple of months now.

I have been having a lot of problems with web browsing (lag, unresponsive app, etc, with stock browser and others I've tried), very choppy video playback with iPlayer (plays Ok for about 5 mins, then goes choppy), and now apps like file manager are crashing every time I run them.

So I am prepared to do a factory reset to see if that clears the issues. I understand that it will clear my personal data, but what about the apps I've downloaded from the Play store? Are these wiped from the internal SD storage? If so, if I move those apps to the external SD card will they be "picked up" after the reset.

Just trying to avoid the pain of having to reinstall the apps I use the most.

Any advice?

Thanks

Hi Joe,

Welcome to the Scroll tablet forum :) I am asuming that you are still running stock firmware so all the things you are suffering are inherant with it :( as for the apps crashing that could be many things but may be lack of memory (internal SD not ram)

As for moving apps about it comes with possibilities of losing/corrupting links that will force a Playstore reload anyway so i'd just go with the factory reset and reload the apps you rely on the most and see if you suffer the crashing again.

Unfortunately most of the early posts on here will tell the same story of an under developed rom being launched on a decent platform :( The one big bonus is that a lot of work has been done by people on here and slatedroid which have improved the tablets functionality 500% and when you feel comfortable enough I'd absolutely encourage you to try it lol

Hi

OK thanks for the answer, I suspected that might be the case.
Am game for a laugh (it can only go wrong, after all), so where is the info about the alternate rom with installation info?

Thanks

Essentially i think if you read through everything CM9 and CM10 / JellyBean on this site (and slatedroid) but from personal experience i would now do this:

*Alter the standard Scroll Extreme .img file with new partition sizes using imgRepacker.
*Load that .img file once saved to the tablet via livesuit.
*Load ClockWorkMod (CWM) via Piers Sticky at the top of this forum about installing CWM.
*Find Christian Troy's Slatedroid CM10 forum page and download the CM10 package of 'build 2012-08-22' 'Gapps 2012-07-26' and 'Mediacom 907c Compatibility 1.2' (I have advised that version as it is tried and tested)
*Copy these to your SD Card (i'd use internal)
*Use CWM to flash build 2012-08-22 then Gapps then Compatibility in that order.
*Reboot the tablet and enjoy lol

I may have made it sound easy'ish but there is a fair bit of reading and understanding but it's that learning that aided me in understanding the basic workings of the system and what does what.

I have to go to work now :x but if you need anymore guidance or advice then i will be back on later tonight but there are many good people on here that will offer sound advice as well lol

Happy reading.......

If you plan on doing this I would strongly suggest that you get Titanium Backup. This will backup and restore all your apps and user data. You can either restore all of them or just some of them. If you don't buy a licence, you can still restore stuff, but it prompts you for every file. If you have more than one Android device your licence key will work with all devices registered to your Google account.

I am currently running Cyanogen Mod, which is much more stable than the original stock version.

I'm having problems with this. Once rebooted, the touchscreen doesn't respond. I have previously successfully updated ROMs quite a few times now but this one has me stumped. Am I using the wrong files such as the latest build being incompatible with the Extreme? Please have a look:
cm10_a10_20120924.zip
gapps-jb-20120726-signed.zip
907c_compatibility_1.2.0.zip
Thanks very much and hope you can help.

+++UPDATE+++
Just sorted the problem, I don't know if it's just mine but the touchscreen only responds if I install the compatibility zip BEFORE the Gapps zip.

I would completely agree with stubaldock about the extreme. It's a good little tablet with poor firmware. I have recently had a go with the Asus transformer and I have to say tat while it's fast, my little extremewith current rom is flyng along and keeping me happy. I went on a bit of a journey with flashingthe ROM in the first place and ended up having to go back to the start and then flash christian troy''s cm10, which is where I am now.
See viewtopic.php?f=57&t=3055 for the excellent guidance I had.
