Free apps from Amazon?

Postby Trashcooky » September 24th, 2012, 1:37 pm

I doubt this will be news to many but perhaps there are some of you that don't know.
Some months ago, I installed the Amazon app store.apk but whenever I tried to download anything free it told me it was not licensed to operatre in my location.

I don't know if it works now because I changed my default language from English US to English UK or what, but the point being that now (I am running JB) it does allow me to download the free apps and there are hundreds of them to choose from including many of the old classics like:

Bubble Sort
Freecell
Solitaire
Mahjong
Angry birds

Just mention a few.

You do have to sort the wheat from the chaff but there are hundreds of free apps available along with thousands of paid ones too, and Amazon also give away their app of the day which I got as Evac HD which is a twist on Pac-Man.
You must have a working Amazon account you will need to authenticate the first time you use the app store.

Each free app download registers as a purchase and I ended up with 13 emails "re your Amazon purchase" all showing a purchase price 0f £00.00. Of course unless you buy ad free there are those annoying little pop-ups at the bottom of your games screen but what can you expect for free.

If you think this might be of interest to you then download the Amazon app here: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/feature.html ... bol3hkif_b
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!

Further to my post above I have made some discoveries which I thought would be useful to share.
Once you have installed the Amazon app store from the link above you can of course download any free app or the daily free app at will.

I got rather greedy and failed to foillow my own advice that if it's free there is probably a catch and I eventually downoaded 19 free apps to try them out. This is what I found out about the Amazon app store relationship.

Eventually my Excel crawled to a stuttering halt with random reboots and long freezes and background processes failing. My first thought was that I perhaps had not heeded Christian Troys warning about the requirement for at least a 300Mb system partition being required before flashing Gapps on CM10 - and this may be partly the reason for the tablets sudden inability to run smoothly like it had been.

However, I have recovered speed and fluidity by reducing my apps load.
I had allready moved everything I could with Apps 2 SD but the Amazon app store app could not be moved from system memory to sd and it was the largest app 39Mb in the system so having allready downloaded and installed all these free apps I thought I no longer need the Amazon app store app and decided to uninstall it.

Nothing wrong with that you may think, apart from the way I did it.
With Amazon app store uninstalled, none of the Amazon downloaded apps would work.
What's more, when I tried to uninstall these now useless apps it created randon re-boots on many of the uninstall processes - which I can only think was because they were looking for the Amazon app for updating account information.

Having eventually removed all that was gold but certainly did not glitter, I have my formula 1 tablet back again and although it pains me to say it (I love a frre gift....) I shall stick with Google Playstore.

On reflection, if my Excel spoofed as a Nexus 7 was a real Nexus 7 I don't believe any of these difficulties would have arrisen because of the much higher specifications - and there's me telling people that you can't turn a Scroll into an i-pad. Should have listened to my own words.

Thanks for your notes about Amazon app store. Highly cautionary and will be noted. I have installed a couple of their free apps of the day. The pool game doesn't matter, but I also found the Pro version of Handrite Free which I liked.

The first thing that struck me about the Amazon store is how slowly it responds compared to Google Play store. It's quite painful.

With the higher memory capacity of your Engage I should imagine you will not experience the same problems as I did but you will know what to look for. :D
