Rooting a Scroll engage

Postby robsbots » December 5th, 2012, 6:53 am

Has anyone rooted the scroll engage 8" yet. I have one running Android 4.0ics and would like to get root access so I can change some file permissions. I'm trying to get some python code working and need to be able to make my scripts executable but I'm unable to without root access.

Thanks for any tips or pointer.

My Engage appears to have root access out of the box. I downloaded and ran an app called Root Checker Basic and that claims that I do have root access.

Its says the same for me but I'm unable to set files as executable via chmod. Not sure what root access to all about on Andriod. Im used to linux and the # prompt.

Thanks for the tip. Didn't know this app existed.
Not sure what it's telling me though......

I don't know what it means either. I think there are a number of rootchecking apps. I have no idea if any of them give any more or any different information

I have not tried doing what you are doing. I basically satisfied myself that I had root access in case I needed it, but at present I am just running apps. If there are different levels of root access, can someone explain it?

I have another app I downloaded (Advanced Tools by SCDevs) which has options to change permissions including the x permission. I am not familiar with chmod. I am not familiar with Linux either, I am afraid, but I have done systrems level programming in the dim and distant past, on PCs, minis and mainframes.

Just installed Advanced Tools and having a play. Also playing with a linux installer on the tablet, and playing with a 3d printer (utterly unrelated). Really must keep my mind on one topic at a time.

I did have a look at the root scroll basic v2 but wanted to make sure I didn't brick may tablet so havn't played with that yet. Any idea what the internal memory is. Is it just an sd card ? I havn't popped the cover yet. May do that soon to see what's inside and then if its a standard sd card in a slot i'll whip it out, back it up and start playing. I'm itching to void the warranty

Wonder how long this toy will last :D

I think it is likely that the internal SD is Embedded SD soldered to the PCB. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Dig ... ed_systems
If I am proved wrong, I would be interested to plug in a bigger card myself.

I haven't opened my Engage. For the time being I am sticking to standard kind of usage, as I use it primarily for reading the daily paper and so forth. If you do open up yours, do you fancy taking some photos and posting them on the forum?

Its still boots. But there are no user serviceable parts inside unless you have access to surface mount / bga soldering/de-soldering kit. Have loads of pics but nothing of much use. Its a tiny board in one corner of the device. A few little module type boards such as wi-fi/camera/button boards etc but that's about it. + a large battery, (Well 2 actually) and the screen. + loads of yellow tape as you would expect in this sort of item.

Here's a directory with a load of images in it. Nothing of much use though I don't think.

Thank you for the photos. They are of use. I have saved a copy of your page for future reference. It takes away my temptation to get out a small cross head screwdriver and undo those two little screws I can see next to the connectors :-) I think what you have revealed is much what one would expect of modern consumer electronics. They have to be built as they are to be the size and weight that they are and to meet a price for mass sales. I'm certainly not disappointed by what you have revealed.

Have you made any progress on bringing your pythons to life? I would be interested in your final opinion on whether the Engage is properly rooted.
