ip address Unavailable

whenever i connect to wireless network, it detects the wireless network, but just shows optaining ip address, than the connection dc once a ip adress cant be optained,

ive read somewhere that you need to change to change to use Static IP, but when i go to Settings > Wireless & Network > WiFi Settings and press the menu button and Advanced i dont see the static ip option, i just see, the mac address, and the ip address which shows ip unavailable,

thanx in advance if you can help me get the static ip option to manually set an ip address,

and 1000 appologies if this problem has been asked on the forum before,

You say this happens when you connect to "wireless networks", do you mean any Wi-Fi network or only a specific one. Most networks use DHCP to serve up an IP address and other parameters when a client connects.

Have you correctly set the encryption & key needed for the network you are trying to connect to as without that you won't get a network address allocated.

TBH static IP is rather old-hat and restrictive and if you have a network using it then I would expect there to be an administrator who knows all about such things, perhaps they have MAC filters set up to only allow pre-authorised devices to connect.

What sort of network are you trying to connect to - a home network which is under your own control, a company network or a public Wi-Fi hotspot ?
