WIFI connection problem

Postby andypbuk » December 25th, 2012, 3:44 pm

Hi

First post on the forum & I'm looking for some help.

I've bought my daughter a scroll pocket for Christmas & I'm having problems accessing my WIFI.

I'm using WEP on my router & I enter the settings on the WIFI screen, SSID, WEP key etc but the tablet fails to connect. It doesn't even appear to be attempting to connect.

Trying to get it to work i've reset the tablet, reset the router, removed all security from my router & all to no avail the tablet still fails to connect.

ICS 4 is on the tablet.

I have one other tablet & two androis phones running various versions of android from 2.3 to 4.0 and all others successfully connect.

Any possible help would be appreciated.

Cheers
Andy

A couple of points - WEP is not the best security to be using, WPA is the more usual security for home routers these days. Is there any special reason why you are using WEP ?

You are entering the SSID for the network - is it not discoverable with a scan or can you not make it discoverable until you have connected then you should just need to select the network and enter the security credentials.

Hi Bob

Thanks for that, only still on WEP because I never got around to changing it & now loads of devices in the house would need changing over so living with WEP.

Tried the SSID hidden & not & it makes no difference, I enter the security details & nothing the tablet goes back to showing secured WEP network & doesn't connect.

Took the tablet to my parent's last night & it connected fine to their WEP network so i suspect it's something this end. Tried it again today & still no joy so i'm not sure what's going on.

Cheers

Andy,
A few thoughts.

You can connect to other WEP secured networks but not your own.
You can conect to your own network from other devices.

Does your SSID contain anything other than letters and numbers. I came across a problem where you couldn't connect to a network that contained a punctuation character.

Could you be exceeding a maximum simultaneous connections limit on your router ?

Does the router have any logs that will help you discover what is going on ?

Hi I am new here this is my first post, I received the Pocket as a Christmas present, I was able to connect wirelessly to my home wireless network on Christmas Day and Boxing Day albeit the connection kept dropping out but today no matter what I try I cannot connect, I have reset the tablet but I cannot delete the existing connection, I have used add network to recreate the connection manually it says saved, secured with WPA but when I click on connect - nothing happens. I already have a Scroll Excel 7inch tablet and that connects with no problems. I am at my wits end, is there anything else I can try? I am on a BTBroadband Connection using a NetgearDGN3500 router

Try the Wi-Fi Analyser app with the connector library. It sounds like you're at the limits of your Wi_Fi from the router. The analyser will allow you to see just how strong a signal you have.

OOPS - till you can connect you can't download the App :-(

I could've written this posting myself! I bought a Scroll Pocket for my grandson for Xmas and it refuses to connect to WiFi. It accurately locates all the available local WiFi networks but when asked to connect it cannot do so! V annoying! We are trying to connect to BT hubs (2 of them in separate locations). Every few minutes a message appears on the bottom of the screen to say "wifi available" but even though the correct pass codes have been entered the tablet will not or cannot make the connection. Both of the BT hubs involved have computers connected to them wirelessly so it is difficult to come to any conclusion except that there is something wrong with the little tablet. Help pleas

I decided to rename my wireless network as there was a hyphen in the original SSID and it seems to have worked, the Pocket is now reconnecting to the wireless network, although it is still a bit intermittent. :? I will try the Wi-Fi Analyser app you recommend BobC...thanks for the tip :)

I've a Scroll Pocket also, acquired only today. Mine's seemed to have no issues with the wifi, it made connection to my sky router (WPA) and also bt homehub (WEP128) and has hung on to it just fine.
The BT hub has a hyphen in the name but it doesnt seem to have bothered it at all.

It might be interesting to compare results with my "good" unit (using "wifi analyser" app, snapshot then checking the csv) ;

In very short range of sky hub, bt hub in adjacent room
BTHomeHub-F79A [WEP][ESS] 2412 MHz Channel 1 -69 dBm
SKY28824 [WPA-PSK-TKIP][ESS] 2437 MHz Channel 6 -49 dBm

In very short range of the BT hub , sky hub in adjacent room.
BTHomeHub-F79A [WEP][ESS] 2412 MHz Channel 1 -46 dBm
SKY28824 [WPA-PSK-TKIP][ESS] 2437 MHz Channel 6 -59 dBm

Hope its useful.

Just noting here that you are entering codes to authorise Wifi access. As best as I can recall I used PBC (Push Button Connection) to connect to my router - I chose the PBC option in Android and pressed the button on the back of my router.

The PBC option took a bit of finding on my tablet (Scroll Engage) but I assume the method is the same for all Androids. Long press on network in Settings/Wifi, select avanced options and then PBC is available in a drop down menu from WPS.

It might be worth giving that a try.

Happy New Year
