Buy a 7" or 10" Tablet

I am looking at 2 tablets that almost have the same spec', but not sure whether a 7" or 10" would be better. What are your thoughts guys? - (pros & cons of 7" vs 10")

From your specs Charlie, clearly the 10" wins if the price is the same, but here's a few thoughts to kick this off.

Excellent - A lot of great pro's n con's for both sizes and also a good point about price (which I forgot to mention - opps) The 7" is £100-125 & 10" is £150-155.

I can not decide on which tablet to get. It's between an Evoke, a Nexus 7 (16gb) or a Sumvision Cyclone 10.1" tablet (the latter has all most the same spec's as the Evoke). I am currently thinking that I might go for the Sumvision 10.1 as I like the idea of a sofa surfer.

I've noticed that things improve with the installation of a newer OS version. Nexus 7 should theoretically be easily upgraded. I've just bought one & am well impressed with the build & look.

I can not decide on which tablet to get. It's between an Evoke, a Nexus 7 (16gb) or a Sumvision Cyclone 10.1" tablet (the latter has all most the same spec's as the Evoke). I am currently thinking that I might go for the Sumvision 10.1 as I like the idea of a sofa surfer.

Personally I would avoid 10" unless you want to display stuff to other people. If you want to hold the disploay up in front of the class, then the bigger the better. For personal use, I think keeping the weight down is more important. A 10" might score on battery life, but if you are a sofa surfer, that is not an issue - you can plug in the PSU between sessions.

I do use a 8" tablet (Scroll Engage). I am glad I did not get anything heavier. It is about 400g, whereas a 10" job would be about 600g. That is quite a difference.

Rather I would say look closely at your need in terms of screen resolution (pixel count). If you are web surfing and want to read desktop rather than mobile pages, an 800x480 screen won't do the job, regardless of being spread across a 7" or 10" screen. I would say that 1024x600 is still a tight fit, then I would as I chose a 1024x768 screen. I was hard pushed to decide what to get when I was researching. In the end I related the 1024x 768 screen on the Engage to the 1024x768 resolution that I used to have on my old CRT monitor on my WIndows 95 PC. It's enough to be usable, and now I have my tablet I am glad that I didn't get one with fewer pixels. The weight is fairly comfortable, yet I still think I would be happier with a 7" weighing a bit less when I am reading an e-book. For surfing I want all the pixels I can get, and the same when I am reading The Times (I read that in the PressReader app to get the look and feel of the paper edition facsimile).

Now if there was a reasonably priced 10" tablet with a 1280x1024 or bigger resolution, then I would go for that and perhaps have a cheap e-reader for books as well.

Thanks for the input guys, it's very much appreciated and it was good to have others points of view - It has been a tricky decision, I've gone for the Sumvision 10.1" tablet, it's not that much more than the Evoke and the hardware is almost the same. With the 10.1" tablet I get a bigger screen size, better resolution, 8GB more internal storage and the trade off is no bluetooth & £30 more - I can live with that.

I guess my 2nd option would have been the Nexus 7 - However I am really keen to test out a 10" tablet (I would have got the Nexus 10, but its price tag is to much)

I got the 10.1 Sumvision Cyclone yesterday, I'm very impressed with it so far and it comes pre-rooted with a working Play Store. I really like the extra screen size and it's not too heavy at 577g.

Unfortunately I will have to return it as there are 4+ noticeable circle/semi-circle like marks (about 1/2 cm dia.) under the actual screen. Not sure what they are but they are NOT anything to do with pixels or the temporary screen protector or the outside of the glass screen. Two of them are right in the middle of the screen and more noticeable and distracting than the others when viewing certain content.

Sounds like you will be pleased with this Charlie and it is a reasonable weight too. Shame it has to go back but you have seen the production lines video how they are made. I suppose its not too surprising some get through with bits inside. My Excel has the most annoying large lump of crud right in the middle of the screen under the glass. God knows how it ended up where it is now but is too big not to have been there hiding somewhere anyway from the start. I bet the IPS screen on your Sumvision is good. Apart from having a much better viewing angle tolerance did you know they also draw less power than the bog standard LCD screens. Is your model 4.1 or 4.2 JB?

I did not know that IPS screens draw less power. It comes with JB 4.1.1. As for bits in tablets (I know what you mean, I too have suffered from dust inside them) but I would say that it's NOT bits inside this tab' more like actual marks on the back of the LCD or something.

Side note:
iPlayer and ITVPlayer (version 1.0.0) work fine on it
