The advice to go to Google Play is correct. That is the obvious first port of call for Android apps and there is a huge selection. Many are free, many are cheap and there are too many to choose from. Often you will find two versions of cheap apps, one free and one for about 65p. 65p is roughly equivalent to 99 cents US. The free version usually makes some money by displaying adverts. Get the "Pro" or "Premium" or "AdFree" version by buying it and you get rid of the annoyance of the adverts. Sometimes there are other benefits to getting the paid version, such as extra games levels or other facilities in non-game apps.

Much of what you can get is suitable for children and adults. You didn't say how old your kids are. The younger they are the more you need to look for specifically kids apps, but older kids like games and more games and there are lots of those.

There are other sources of apps, or appstores around. They have advantages and disadvantages. The biggest disadvantage is that an obscure appstore may have dodgy apps with malware on them. Hopefully other forum members will tack their own recommendations to the thread.

I think the other appstore you should consider after Google Play is Amazon Appstore at
www.amazon.co.uk/appstore
It seems to run slow compared to Google Play. Not everyone has been happy with Amazon Appstore, but I am happy with it and I like their special offers. Amazon are trying to build up their market in Android apps so at present they are giving away apps that you normally have to pay for. Most of these are normally 65p apps, but some have bigger price tags. Many are games, and some seem aimed at a lower age group. Each is available for 24 hours, midnight to midnight, displayed at the top left hand corner of your tablet when you have the Amazon Appstore running on your tablet.

You won't save a lot on each Amazon offer normally, although one I got had a normal price of about £6. If you find a few you like the savings will mount up to a few quid. It is nice to be able to try out games and apps without the hassle of adverts running at the bottom of the screen.

Hi sparkx and welcome to the forum.
Unfortunately you broke the forum rules with your first post which asks you not to put help requests in the introduction area. Unfortunately you have attracted quite a lot of traffic so I have moved your thread in to the correct area of the forum - the help area.

Hope you get sorted out OK.

@JCB, I found the Amazon app store quite exciting when I first used it however, I did find that many of their free apps had sales tags within them i.e. "do you want a hint?" - buy your hints here... etc... but more to my annoyance was I discovered that Amazon had installed a hefty sized app loader on my nand and when I removed it, none of the apps worked.

Seems like the old adage of no such thing as free lunch applies here.

Hi TC,

When you are talking about Amazon free apps here, are you meaning their free apps in general, or are you talking about their Free App of the Day, that is offered for 24 hours? I'm asking this as I have not downloaded any of the former, only the latter App of the Day. So far I haven't noticed any "sales tags" in any of these. Perhaps I have just been lucky.

Did you try re-installing the Amazon app loader? I am wondering if would bring your dead apps back to life.

So far the size of the Amazon store app hasn't bothered me. I still have spare memory. I think it is worth noting that you can uninstall an app downloaded from Amazon and it remains in the Amazon cloud ready for re-installation. I have parked a couple of apps like that, which I don't want to run now but I might choose to in the future. I have just done a test using Total Pool. I got that as App of the Day a while back, but uninstalled it after I felt I didn't fancy it. It has been sitting in the cloud since then. It is now listed at 99p but I have just downloaded it again without any apparent charge.

Hi John, I was referring to the app of the day but it may have been a trend during the period I was trying to get a free Amazon lunch that some of these tagged apps were around. It wasn't necessary to spend money to play the games but I discovered if you wanted hints or tips or power ups to make things (allegedly) better that the small clutch of free apps (games) I had at the time (sorry I can't name them now) had this ability to tempt you to spend money built into them.

Regarding the Amazon down-loader/installer app, I discovered that when I got rid of that, not only could I not run any Amazon downloaded games without it but I couldn't even uninstall them either - so in the end, as I wasn't in control and my Amazon account details were needed to download every free app, my suspicions overcame my trust (I am an original Grumpy old man who trusts no-one when they want my money) and I decided that out was for me. However, to keep things balanced on this, we all know free usually isn't - somewhere along the line - and Amazon are no worse than Google in this respect. Perhaps the main difference between Amazon and Google is that Amazon just want your money whereas Google want your whole life and that of your family, friends and neighbours  .

Hi TC,

Thanks for that update. You're not alone in your problems with Amazon Appstore. Looking around other forums I see others suffer problems, particular high battery power consumption. Some people hit problems and get rid of Amazon. Others don't and don't see what the fuss is about :-) I stand warned.
