Hello bow,

NAND flash memory is a type of non-volatile storage technology that does not require power to retain data.
The memory built into the Essential's hardware is called NAND and it contains the android operating system, data and apps inside the chip/s on the Essential's circuit board.
The NAND in your Essential is divided up into sections called partitions, rather like a hard drive with specific data residing in each partition.

It is not important to understand this but NAND is a portmanteau created by combining the word “NOT” with “AND”.
N(OT) + AND = NAND. If you’re thinking this looks like a boolean test you’re right. The result of a NAND test is always true unless both inputs are true.
This allows a series of gates or switches which are either on or off (false or true) to be read and written to which allows for the binary root basis of computer programming.

SD Memory cards offer the same facilities with the advantages that they're small, extremely portable, completely silent, allow immediate access, and are quite relable. Being portable means you can use the same card in different devices which can be very useful.

If your SD card works OK in your Essential but not in your father's as you say, then it suggests there may be a fualt with his device.

WIFI woes can occur for many reasons and may even be the device itself....and where a connection cannot be made at all, most times it is a security issue preventing the tablet from connecting to your Router. If you have a Windows PC/Laptop to hand that connects OK to the internet then you could download this useful app: http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ which shows all the local WIFI users neighbouring you, which channel they are using and how strong their signals are. If you find you are using a crowded channel and can see other channels less crowded then simply switching channels can make a world of difference to the strength and thus reliability of your WIFI connections.

Also, sometimes it can be productive (if all else fails) to switch off your router for a few minutes and then switch it on again. This will force the router to carry out a clean reboot. This can sometimes resolve issues but may affect your current IP address and depending on your ISP - repeatedly switching the router on and off may auto-reset your bandwidth to training mode at the exchange which can result in lower speeds until the re-training has completed which could take up to 3 weeks.

If your tablet shows a strong WIFI signal but refuses to connect to it at all then you can temporarily turn of the security on your router and see if the tablet connects OK. If it does then you are missing something in the settings on your tablet. WARNING! make sure you turn the security back ON in the router once you have proved the connection.

Here is a simple video showing how to connect an android device to WIFI: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LrjQzaJNbwM

Hope this helps a little.
If it isn't broken then don't try to fix it!
