Trouble with my wifi internet connection :(

Postby triedthat » March 18th, 2013, 12:48 pm

Just bought a Scroll Plus 7" and am having trouble connecting to my home wifi router.
My laptop is working fine on the Zoom X6 ADSL router as it always has. It runs unsecured (yes, I know!) and doesn't have SSID enabled so no password is required.
The Scroll has found the network and does connect but it keeps dropping in and out in a few second cycles. In the settings screen it says connecting, connected, saved, then it drops out and starts the same cycle over and over.
Have tried the Scroll in different parts of the house but no difference. It does connect sites but only briefly before it drops out. Signal strength is shown as excellent in settings.
There is no affect to the laptop connection when this is happening.

Basically HELP!! It's driving me bonkers!

I think you have probably been unlucky and sold a tablet with a faulty wi-fi chip. You probably need to talk to the shop about a replacement tablet. If your laptop is rock solid, so should your tablet wi-fi connection. My Scroll Engage only drops out when the router/modem also stops talking to my PC which is on a wired gigabit connection and the router and modem need switching off and on again in time honoured fashion.

You know you should run with your wireless router secured. When you do the easiest way to connect to it is using PBC (push button connection). Initiate it on the device (laptop, tablet, etc.) and then press the button on the back of the router within 15 seconds (I think).

To initiate PBC on my Engage, I have to tap the connection in Wi-fi on the tablet, check Show advanced options, open the drop down menu (tap the little triangle) for WPS and tap Push button. Then tap Connect and toddle over to the router and press the button on the back.

I assume that Android ICS always does it this way. It beats me why it is hidden under advanced options. I see this as a basic option myself, and it saves fannying around with passwords, etc. I expect there is a similar option on your laptop. I have connected laptops in a similar fashion.

Thanks, I'm thinking the same thing, that it's faulty. This button you mention, isn't present on my router, must be a new development, my router is about 5 or 6 years old. The laptop is totally stable on the network so does tend to point a finger at the tablet.

I'm not sure when PBC came in. I've only had the one wireless router. I was content to stick with wired connections up to then. It's just under 4 years old, one of the first models to have wired gigabit and wireless-N. If your router is older, it may well be wireless-G. There should be nothing wrong about that, it should be fast enough for most people's needs and usually the speed limitation is with your broadband provider. Wireless-N devices should work with Wireless-G routers, but sometimes there may be odd incompatibilities.

If I am right that you are on Wireless-G it might be worth seeing if it works with someone else's Wireless-N. However I still think the tablet is faulty if it won't work with Wireless-G.

I'm out in the sticks so only get upto about 2MB and change DL, the router would easily cope with much more. I think it is a wireless G.
