How to backup

Before attempting to upgrade it would be sensible to back up. Given this device is a clone of a cherrypad/smartpad/nanopad I have managed to successfully back up and root this device.

Backup can be done using clockworkmod , I managed to work it out using comments and files found in this thread

The end result is several image files stored on the sd card.

Interestingly the cherrypad forums suggest that an update to gingerbread is in the pipeline. Also there is an update for 2.1 called update7.zip. I have tried to flash it by renaming it update.zip and placing on the sd card, it starts off well, passing the signature check and verification check but then fails during the install. So this is as far as I have got with being able to upgrade.


As for rooting the device I installed the android usb driver from the SDK and then used adb to root it.


I largely followed the instructions here http://augendev.wikispaces.com/How+To+Root but the usb driver install failed and I overcame this by installing PDAnet on my PC.

Very helpful Merlot. If yours is rooted does that mean that you can sideload a Flash apk.

I am deparate to get iPlayer working.

Not as far as I know.

There are various posts around about getting flash working in 2.1 and installing flash for 2.1 apk's. But as far as I am aware these are for specific devices and will not work with the scroll's browser. I've been trying for over a week! There are also reports of flash 4 lite working, but it does not, as the correct browser is not installed.

There is myplayer, as someone posted on here earlier. That will get you iplayer working.

I would dearly love to be wrong and for someone to correct me, but afaik, as it stands at the moment, no 2.2 froyo no flash, and that's that.

1. root your Scroll
2. su in terminal
3. tar cf - / | ssh you@yourhost dd bs=1k of=android.tar

It complains there is not enough entropy to generate the ssh public key ciphers - it helps if you touch the screen a lot - == mouse movements a source of entropy in desktop computers I guessed and it seems to unbung the ssh.

It gives me a complete filesystem tree to extract and poke about with on a bigger machine.

Restoring it to a broken scroll, thats next challenge.

Thats pretty interesting, and could possibly be used in reverse to install Linux to the scroll ?
