I'm on cable and my wireless has nothing at all to do with my internet connection. I've set my wireless router as a pass-through, connecting the wired and wireless LAN, and my internet connection is managed by my Linux box. There is no way they could get my location from any sort of wireless snooping.

Your external IP will still be seen by sites / google maps, unless you use a proxy or VPN

If you are on a Dynamic IP, then chances are other people who live near by have also had that IP, and have used sites such as speedtest.net and submitted their address for better locationing, It may come from your ISPs end / Exchange, But they dont just use your IP for software based GPS, they capture other Access points near by and use their location to help pin point you too

What does Geosense do?

Geosense is a Windows Sensor that provides the Location and Sensors platform in Windows 7 with accurate and reasonably ubiquitous positioning information without requiring or the assistance of GPS hardware, enabling more practical location-based applications and scenarios on Windows 7.

Although not required, it works best on computers with a WiFi adapter.

The Android OS asks you if you want to send google your location details during setup, can be turned off in privacy I think.

But take a look at what some of the Apps make you agree to, "Reading your SMS, GMAIL, LOCATION, What colour underwear you have on"

The apps worry me more, they are just people sitting on a PC watching your info flood in to them

none of this is new yo know... IP tracing has existed for years. all you have to know is what company uses what ip clusters where and you can get a vague approximation.

If you dont want to be found, dont own a mobile phone either.... they are even more accurate and can tell where you are to within five metres. The later models can even be silently "woken up" to handshake a network and thereby give your position. The only way to stop this is to destroy the handset, newer models have a backup battery system that will kick in to transmit a handshake signal even with the main battery removed.
