I got tired of the warning notification about disconnecting a drive, as well as being worried about drive corruption, so I experimented with dismounting the drive using GScript:

umount scsi

It only works if you're rooted btw. Checking with a file manager shows the drive has been unmounted.

But, you still get the (mis-spelt) system warning message Image

I'm using my Western digital 360Gb hard drive plugged to the Host port (USB Powered). Runs well if connected to mains although I wouldn't reccomend using gallery or the in built video player if you have a large number of files as it does still try and scan them all. I use Astro to navigat the drive and all files worked well.

So, you're saying if the scroll is connected to the charger it will power an external hard drive? It must make more power available than when running from its battery. That's good news, now we only have to stop it scanning and trying to generate thumbnails.

I plugged in a flash drive with a lot of large (14mp) pictures on it when I first got the scroll, and it was scanning and thumbnailing for more than 5 minutes. I couldn't unplug it during this time for fear of corrupting the drive.

Is there a way to view usb devices without rooting? I'm a non techie but with some common sense and wary to dive into rooting unless I have to.

Rooting is no big deal and should be done straight away as many things need it. 'Root' is just Linux calls it's 'admin' account.

go to settings/sd card & device storage/scsi memory and you should have the option to mount

Drag the notification bar from the top of the screen downwards.. it should show the option to Mount there..
Scroll 7" (purchased 24/5/11)
Android 2.1 Firmware 1.02. Now Rooted and Phone APKs renamed. Mali file replaced.
Market still works..
