Did you perform a temp root with z4root?

I did a perm root the first time didnt see the point of doing a temp one , wish i would have took my time a bit more to be honest , i should just have temp rooted and used the update.zip from here instead of messing with command line stuff

Okay, so what application / technique are you using to "see" the build.prop.old file?

If you used z4root and selected permenant, i suspect that you still hace root, but astro/linda do not have superuser permissions

I have just checked on mine and astro cannot make modifications either (even though i know mine is rooted). I use super manager. I understand that you cannot install software either, is this specifically from the market? Could you for example download supermanager from google, email it to yourself (assuming that you have email set up) and install it from app installer once downloaded, this will then get superuser permissions if your still rooted

super manager will not install , i have tried root explorer as well , that says i do not have root , i seem to get stuck installing software that uses the phone side of things that dont exist now because my build.prop is not usable in its state.

Think you mày have to get the windows drivers working, numerous guides available for different operating systems àe available on this forum.unfortunately it seems as though its abit hit and miss as to which one works in each case. Once these are setup you may be able to use a window on your PC to rename the prop file. I'm sure that others on the forum will be more help than I (I'm relatively new to this)
