recommended programmes for dvd backup and convert to avi

have been trying for about three weeks to work out how to get a dvd film to play on scroll. have had a few suggestions of how to do it. i understand need to back up dvd to my pc... what free/open source programme do u recommend i use to do it. then i understand i need to convert file to avi to put on sd card. but what file do i choose from thos converted is it a n iso file and what converter from a free/opensource would you recommend. i dont think its that hard, i'm just lacking the knowledge. thank you for your advice.

I use winxdvd ripper for all my DVD conversion work. I have registered to get all features, however before I did this it was still a good tool in free mode.

I think Handbrake converts DVDs to various formats.

i use dvdrip, but it all depends on which OS you use
if in doubt, search
firmware v1.01 kernel 2.6.29 Android 2.1
2nd scroll firmware v1.00
