Not sure if they are actually downloading.

If you bring down the task bar you'll see them in there...

Also because the scroll has its spastic internal /nand downloads go to there for some reason... check /nand/download(s)

Will do. I'll also add your build.prop file mods, sorry I missed it first time round :)

Aye which can then be copied/moved out to the sdcard to prevent the spazzy "running out of space" message

Nope nothing in Download(s) and the pull down says no service/notifications.
When I clicked download in the market a download icon apears in the task bar for a Nano second then it's gone. I'm thinking nothing is actually downloading but can't figure why?
I followed the steps to root up to where it says to delete the gallery/viewer but did not do that step!
I have wifi because I can use the browser/market and upload pics to Twitter/FB etc.

Great advice, thanks for overview of streamlining the scroll, gives good explanation of what each modification to the original system is expected to do and how to do each step as it has been discovered by fellow scroll users, for me this is better than the update.zip as I am unsure what has been modded and how, where, why etc

Sounds like you fell victim to the known market bug. From what I understand it happens with firmware 1.01 whether you root or not :(
It should be sorted in time. Whatever else, DON'T START SMOKING AGAIN. I wish I could stop like you (30yrs+)
