How to open your scroll

Postby JimmyW » January 24th, 2011, 8:38 pm

Guess who's sat with a nicely opened and still working scroll?

I'll update this with pics as I go along the road of disassembly...

Tools needed:
  • Jewellers Phillips Screwdriver
  • Knife (Good strong penknife will do)
  • Balls of steel

Destructions:
1. Using the knife pull off the black antenna cover from the back (I use the flat edge to work under between the plastic and aluminium and twist slightly to pop it off (It's held on with double sided tape)

2. Undo the 2 screws you'll find there and the 2 you can see at the bottom of the scroll either side of the USB ports

3. Starting at the top insert your knife/fingernail/plastic credit card and prise the screen away from the alu chassis

4. Run fingernail down along the sides to release the 4 clips per side.

5. Whilst lifting the screen push it carefully upwards towards the top to slide the USB ports away from their mounting holes.

6. You will end up with the scrolls' screen detatched from the housing attached to the headphone/side vol/power buttons by a ribbon cable (Don't kink this as it'll be pooted)

I'll do some tripod-based macro ones in good light when I'm capable of movement (Just detroyed a 32oz Steak  )

Employees are like mules. Some you stand in front of and coax them along with a carrot. Some you stand behind and kick them in the arse. The key to management is knowing which mules are which!

I'm going to leave the detailed photos till tomorrow when I have proper lighting.

@mojo:  no I love pulling things to bits and always know I can reassemble them (even PCB level repairs if needed)

@Veng: Possibly, although it's rather thin I think I could quite happily assemble a heath robison affair (There's only 2 leads from it nicely coloured red and black) to give it a bit more oomf with the same voltage

I have noticed a place on the board which possible is intended for bluetooth hardware (antenna, chip and several pcb caps (and a pcb led), I'll investigate the area more closely (The surrounding circuit will give me more clues)
I also likey 4 solder points labelled com1 (expansion/test or spare USB)

The camera is going to be easily moddable to point out of the back (New drilled hole + swap camera around) as it's on a ribbon and has a bit 'o' foam on the back of it (May even upgrade with a donor one for higher res)

Have yet to lift the PCB off the back of the screen to looky at the fun on the reverse of it (Since there's no major CPU visible on this side)

Couldn't help myself ;)

Couple of added pics showing the as yet unknown area of unused PCB and the delectable-looking com1 :D
