so we need to restore our original build.prop file before updating?
and what of the phone/gallery related .apk's or are they irrelevant?

I don't know if it is coincidence but marketplace has started working again!. I wasn't paying too much attention as I didn't expect it to work but, somehow, I was prompted for my Google login. I signed in and then I was able to download and install applications only available in Marketplace!

I don't know if that makes any sense but is working now. Before the upgrade I could select apps but they would never download.

best wishes, Neil

Glad to hear its worked out for ya.

krulimiteer wrote:Updated with no probs, everything working as should, nothing wrong with the official update on the scroll options website, and I will say it if no one else will, basically it is warpedflashes updates and build.props that breaks everything. I would suggest that he remove the relative posts and links to his updates as it wont be too long before he completely bricks a trusting newcomers tablet. A bit irresponsible to post them here as they were posted untested and before he even had a scroll!. He is just learning as he goes along like the rest of us, but unlike the rest of us he insists on encouraging users to use his edited scripts under the pretence he knows what he is doing. A classic case of a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. sorry, it needed saying.

As a developer myself, I have to seriously wonder if this post was made by someone from SO or simply someone who has fallen foul of modding in the past and now feels it necessary to don a breadboard and hail "the end is nigh" whenever someone offers to develop (for free, off his own back, and in his own time, for the good of anyone who would like to use them I might add!) software changes for a device.

Let me highliiously unmade point here, Storage Options stated right at the beginning, any changes to the hardware, or non-Storage Options updates applied will void the warranty, therefore if you want to use an update, or change, or addition posted on here, you must be prepared that A: You will void your warranty and B: You will stand a slim chance of irreversably damaging your tablet. Those are risks that you take when doing something like this.

I've been a developer for many years, I hold a degree in Computer Science and have worked with many different languages on many different platforms and OS's, I can tell you from first hand experience, even the origional developers don't get it right (Lets look briefly at the firmware history for the scroll shall we? 5% battery issue, inverted app issue, calibration app issue, market issue (and that's a MAJOR ONE!) not to mention more minor "niggling" ones forum members have mentioned!) Microsoft - one of the biggest software developers on the planet... Windows ME and Vista anyone? :lol: :lol:

We'd all like a full software changelog/service manual/hardware address list/hardware list/driver packages and step by step how-to for how the scroll is made and installed, however we're not going to get that, however there are people who are willing to use their existing knowledge to trawl through the android system files in order to make changes to improve the tablet. Same as there are people willing to risk damaging or worst still, completely frying their tablet to tell us/show us what's inside - I won't go into a tirade about the curiosity of man and its part in encouraging our development, but dude, there will always be those of us that look at an electronic device and go "ooo, I wonder what happens if..." :D This DOES NOT mean you have to then blinding go and do the same. We're not pointing a gun at you and forcing you to update your tablet, and disclaimers are put in place to begin with, if you're too lazy to read them, that's your fault, no one elses.

The continued work and dedication of the people on this forum to find solutions to issues, all because they own and love their scroll tablet is what makes this forum so brilliant, when I purchased my scroll, one of the deciding factors was the fact that there was already an established community looking for ways to improve and adapt the existing software/hardware to extract the best possible experience out of their purchase as they could!

On a related note - I'm sat here now, with my old XDA Mini S next to me (about 3 years old or so) Came with Windows Mobile 5, it now has 6.5, and a mild overclock, two items which could only be possible due to the work of owners and developers willing to put their own time into creating the necessary builds and software (I will give a quick shoutout to XDA Developers at this point, they may be a sullen bunch but they do get the job done!). I realise that both of these things could have bricked my phone, however I weighed the pros and cons and decided that it would provide more benefits than drawbacks, that said, the phone has been on this build for just over a year and is working fine, even with an overclock and business grade use 6 days out of every 7!

So seriously, before you take another knock at these people, realise that they are simply offering up a possible fix that some people might well be grateful for, I know from personal experience that root access will be very useful as I need to change the ad-hoc network settings on mine to make it more useful for what I do. We're all making the best of a bad situation, SO won't give us any background information for software change purposes, or a built in way to take a backup, these guys are offering a third way and are even willing to adjust future SO updates to work with their modifications. If you don't like this, that's fine, keep yours stock and deal with SO's updates and the issues included within.

I'll also make a final point, Linux, the open-source operating system that Android is based upon, is supported, developed and tested heavily by lots of people in their spare time, this is one of the reasons why it's one of the most secure and well developed operating systems in existance, by your viewpoint, they should all leave well alone and leave it upto those who are software developers by trade and profession, and instead turn the operating system into another £90-a-licence OS?

Sorry for the long post, but that really annoyed me *gets off of soapbox*

I agree with your comment, and yes we do have experienced devs on this forum now who are doing a brilliant job, but being experienced devs there is a certain procedure they are going through/following before releasing their mods on the public forum to the whole community, as they do over at xda etc. Surely as a forum member with programming experience you are familiar with this procedure. There is a big difference between experienced developers building and releasing a custom rom/fimware, and a beginner experimenting and editing official builds and posting it on here to new users without knowing what they are doing, and by their own admission, doing it coz they were told to do it an their other android device on another forum.

I still think it was, and is irresponsible to do it in the first place, but possibly excusable because he was not aware himself what the effects could be (he didnt have a scroll at the time they were posted!). But what is even more irresponsible is to leave those mods there now we know that they cause issues.

krulimiteer, I can see your point of view, however, even releases posted on XDA Developers are not monitored and checked, a large number of the rom cookers on there are teenagers (script kiddies for all intents and purposes) some of which have come up with some trully fantastic builds, these are not experienced developers, yet they can come up with some trully wonderful programs/roms. They are tested to the best of the ability of the person(s) building them and then released, it is then up to the forum users to make their own decision whether or not they wish to install that build/update/fix/patch/piece of software. This makes them, in effect a beta or RC tester. Second to this, up until the release of a firmware update from SO, NO-ONE knew what effect patches/fixes/hacks would have on future updates, that's why Warpedflash stated that he couldn't guarentee the effects of the patch on future updates.

I realise that he didn't have a scroll at the time of building, however as you've said, he did have another android device, and since that time has tested and refined his code on having a scroll to work with. The issue remains that ALL custom roms are based on an edited official build, and even on XDA Devs a large portion of the coders are beginners, building custom roms using the instructions of others, in the end, it is software, somewhere down the line there will be a way to reset it back to factory settings as if no changes were ever made, some of us are willing to take that chance, you clearly are not. I personally don't think that his mods should be taken down, currently there is no better alternative and they are installed on the precursor that they might stop official updates working properly. The warning is in place, if someone is stupid enough to install an update and then moan that they can't install the latest SO update, that's hard luck, but it's not Warpedflash's fault that they didn't take notice of the disclaimer.

You can go skydiving, it can be a very fun and rewarding experience, however there are risks. The same is true of modding and customising an electronic device, both are done at your own risk.

These mod's are not causing any issues - unless you want to use an official update - If you do want to use an official update - why would you be on here in the 1st place, following custom (non-official) mod's.

Well thanks to "script kiddies" and amateur coders (I use the term loosely, as the work they produce is as high as the pro-coders I work with everyday) I now have a workable 2.2 android running on my scroll... Any problems during the test installing phase were worked through and resolved very quickly and efficiently, which has resulted in (as yet too unstable for joe user to be happy with) but none the less, very quick (500 quadrant marks as opposed to 300 on 2.1) and a whopping 1.4gb of internal space (as /nand is no longer needed) to install apps to.

As the testing (Which I am happy to potentially "brick" my scroll during) continues more features of 2.2 will be put into place and refined to suit the hardware SO have installed, which btw is on a testboard... (Read your info in settings if you think otherwise) This should also lead to a more stable device with less lagging on opening the drawer/apps/browser/keyboard, than any number of firmware "updates" (I use this term loosely too as the SO update simple fixed a battery issue but ensured it removed youtube and marketplace from the scroll - except for one user who reports his marketplace works now - and has mixed results on varying machines, mostly failing to install)

If anything clockworkmod - which was not the work of Warpedflash - is the mod preventing the 1.02 (which is odd as it doesn't care what's in the update or indeed the SHA1 of the file) the build.prop and removal of the telephony.apks were not responsible for the failure to install as it doesn't update not check these files.

If you see something you don't like then walk away from it, don't stand there waving your wrongly thought out banner of justice, as most people have bought a scroll with the intention of hack the hell out of it, rather than buying a £4-500 quid iPad or Galaxy Tab and not daring to do so on such an expensive bit of kit. (I happily pulled my scroll apart to get details of the hardware inside, and couldn't have given a monkeys sore rectum if I broke it, as that's what accidental damage insurance is for, especially on a £130 lump of parts)

If you don't want to feel singled out on what's become a very closely knit collection of geeks/enthusiasts & inquisitive people, as a rightious pretentious prick, then stop takling out of your arse before using your brain.

@kommander
Again I agree with you, the custom roms produced by these gifted devs are all tested to the best of their ability out of a sense of self pride and responsibility before they are released to the general community, and between them, if they did not have the ability to test them sufficiently then they would delay releasing them to the general community. In both your comments you only confirm what my issue was, but if there is now the appropiate warnings then yes there is no problem.

@Charlie
I am commenting in the official firmware release thread, In which it was implied to inexperienced users that the officially firmware was corrupt instead of addressing the real problem users were having, but that is all sorted now so enough said.

@JimmyW
Please read my posts correctly, I have said nothing against these developers, and have the greatest respect
