SD Card class?

Postby Kommander » January 27th, 2011, 12:46 am

Here's an interesting one for those in the know.

Looking to get a 16gb or 32gb card for the scroll as soon as possible, firstly for space (I've found it to be very video capable, especially when travelling to/from callouts) and with such a large screen, better than my iPod Classic at the job! Secondly for the ability to update and to look into custom updates, linux on scroll and a few other suggested ideas.

Here's my question, does anyone know what SD Card class (speed rating) the card interface is rated at? I don't want to buy a class 10 and then find out it'll only make full use of a class 4 for example.

For those who don't know what I'm on about, basically the "class" relates to the maximum read/write speed of a flash memory card, e.g.

Rating | Read Speed (Mbits/s) | Write speed (Mbytes/s) | Class
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
13x | 16.0 | 2 | 2
26x | 32.0 | 4 | 4
32x | 38.4 | 5 |
40x | 48.0 | 6 | 6
66x | 80.0 | 10 | 10

(Figures from wikipedia - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Secure_Dig ... ass_Rating)

If anyone knows this, I'd be immensely greatful :D Thanks in advance.

@ Kommander

I have been using a 16gb class 4 & has worked well with the scroll - (not got the money for anything above class 4 - lol)

my sandisk 32gb class 4 card arrived today and im very impressed by it, definately feels snappy when copying mp3's from onboard storage to sd and vice-versa, is there no benchmarking app?

the reason i didn't go for a higher rated card is simply use. i don't see any possible use the scroll could be used for that would require a higher class card...

I was simply thinking in the terms of video playback - I've noticed occasional skipping/slowing down on SD video, haven't tried an MKV file yet! That plus if running an OS off of the card, faster access would be crucial! If anyone has a higher class card they could test with, it could be useful information for people looking to buy a new card in the future also.

Just looked around, http://www.androidzoom.com/android_appl ... _gqzx.html - this apparently lets you set a file size to copy/read from your SD card and internal memory, and gives you a breakdown of read write speeds, anyone got a class 10 handy? :P

Well Kommander, after testing android 2.2 benchmarks in quadrant went from around 300 in 2.1 to over 500 with Steve's latest test build... So the improvement in performance should help with video rendering speeds.

thanks jimmy ;)

but now I've entered into the phase known as 'bad mojo' (often occurs when my imagination runs riot and the part of me deemed 'common sense' dribbles out of my ears)... The scroll must run faster!
over-clocking options?

@mojo - Steve mentioned a speed switch in the 2.2 which will let the cpu run happily at 1gig :)

at 1ghz??? Image
thats on par with my beloved HTC HD2's snapdragon isn't it?

i got hold of SetCPU over on XDA, it has a profile for ARM processors, and successfully picks up our scrolls chip and speed.
it has ondemand scaling and performance mode (lock to specific frequency) im still having a play but wont get too serious into it as i intend to update to 2.2 so 1ghz should be enough to sate my appetite...for a week...

@Kommander: haha! im getting on the IRC soon ;)
