Hold Volume Up button while you power on the scroll, keep hold of Volume up until it changes from the welcome screen to the recovery console

i find it works if you hold the volume up button until the scroll white screen brightens, ie. after a few seconds.

firmware v1.01 kernel 2.6.29 Android 2.1
2nd scroll firmware v1.00

Hi Mac,

you were spot on, it was a settings/sounds, it was set to HDMI, thanks very much for your help.
