Just got a scroll - Now what ?

Postby bobchewy » February 21st, 2011, 9:44 pm

Hi ALL, I'm wondering what I just purchased...its called PC but its not..storage options emailed to tell me i cant tether my mobile phone to it to use as mobile should i be unable to find a wifi zone..im guessing i can transfer files form phone to it..
flash flv videos get stuck or play with no audio..MKV video so far plays inc multichannel AAC (stereo mix down)
WMV/wma video plays quite well..the HD video mp4 and some flv plays pretty well too, in fact better than on pc.
havent been able to wifi it as yet so not been on the net..no hotspots near me only BT FON secure sites..might need a trip to central london to do that..still puzzled by wifi 'advanced option' DNS1 DNS 2 etc...and what is MAC ip address ?
gateway stuff too...storage options tells me that its inherited mobile phone stuff..er so does it mean these options dont work? if not then why didnt they remove them prior to making the thing? bit disappointed by storage options minimal email.response..
does a net dongle work on it? thats similar to mobphone so is it the same tethering problem?

ive added a 16gb flash drive...ive read you can add hard drive..via the mini usb cable adaptor
still not got TIFF format pic to display..not tied the real media playback
only avi,wmv,mkv,flv
audio ive tried is mp3 (which i hate) wma ..its meant to play ac3..

so what is the scroll? a phone? (ringtone volume??) , a graphics pad? a pc?

i kinda knew that..i was being ironic...it was after storage options emailed me saying that the scroll has menus inherited from android phones..but not saying if they worked and if not why they were still on the machine

You bought it, and only then try to work out what it is ?

Surely you only buy something because you have fully researched its functions, purpose, capabilities and whether or not it suits your needs, not buy something without knowing anything about it, and then complain about it.

Also reading the help and tutorials parts of this site will educate you further as to why you can not play flash videos or tether your mobile phone to its wifi... but then a simple researching into Android 2.1 should have told you that before you bought a device running Android 2.1.

If you do not know what DNS or IP address or Gateway is, I suggest you google the term "Networking"

Yes there are parts of Android 2.1 that are designed for phones only - Again, read the tutorials section

since i bought it on spec..with a friend who also bought one at same time..i didnt research into because i didnt know i was getting one ...no i do not know much about android phones, but then again does everyone? i have already been told by the company about tethering, which contradicts what the seller told me in maplins,,was i complaining? does it say anywhere that i was complaining i merely asked a simple question which was based on an email storage options sent me. i asked them what was on certain menus..and was told that these menus were 'inherited from android phones operating system..to which i naturally asked do they operate? and if not why are they on the device? ..that seems a design flaw to me. so naturally i wonder what it was if it had features that didnt operate..like buying a hard drive that has DVD burning intructions appear when its on...if android 2.1 has phone features then why are they on this device if it doesnt make phone calls...and has ringtone volume on it..i didnt come here for a lectured about how bloody clever people are...and spoken down to as if i were an idiot. i dont ask you why you bought car do i?...i came here looking for answers to questions that are quite natural...and not to be spoken down to..btw when was the art deco movement started and who instigated it..and its pioneers and critics? dont know the answer? tut tut..not very bright are you?

Hi Bobchewy:

The phone stuff loaded on the scroll is inherited from android 2.1 as it was, as far as I understand, initially designed for mobile phone use. I agree it would have made sense for them to remove the non-useable parts before distibuting the Scroll, but only SO can answer as to why that was not done.
I presume when you say you have not tried wifi that you dont have a wifi enabled router at home, it should work on all encryptions providing you have the passphrase, of course.

Reference your questions about DNS, IP & MAC, the following pages should be of some help:

MAC: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAC_address
DNS: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Domain_Name_System
IP: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IP_address

At this time, I dont believe a net dongle will work as the scroll doesnt have the required device drivers in order to interact with one. Hard drives and memory sticks do work with the scrooll, but some users have reported incompatibility problems.
