Having found a few spare hours this afternoon I've finally got round to having a go at some of the recommended mods on the Scroll. Progress so far has been good, and despite having no prior experience of Android I've found the guides on here excellent and haven't encountered any points yet where I've been scratching my head wondering what they're referring to! For anyone that's interested I've listed how things have been done below.
Brand new Scroll 7" tablet - firmware version 0.94
- Powered on, signed up for new Google account, connected to Wi-Fi, downloaded 1 app (Adobe PDF reader), then experienced issues with the Market app.
- Scratched head for ages, reset numerous times, then downloaded and installed firmware version 1.02 from StorageOptions site thinking it might resolve things!
- Discovered this forum, and consequently the fact that the Market issue is a known "bug", with some people having more success than others as to when it actually affects them. Also that fw 1.02 doesn't fix the app but instead removes it, along with Youtube!
At this point I still have a working Scroll, with Internet and the ability to download/install apps from other Android sources, including those that redirect to the marketplace app. However decide to go ahead and try out the main mods detailed on here, namely rooting the Scroll, installing Clockworkmod so that I can backup/restore the Scroll, renaming the phone files to help improve battery life, and installing build.prop v3.
- rooted the Scroll following the instructions on here - very easy!
- installed Clockworkmod app following the instructions on here - no problem
- renamed the various phone files (PMT!) following instructions on here. OK, although slight panic when error message appeared after the first file was renamed but read instructions and this is normal apparently! Needed to install a root file explorer to complete this mod so went for the Root Explorer app, which downloaded and installed ok despite being a paid for app from the market!! Transaction went smoothly and still no problems with the market despite no icon being present on the Scroll.
- installed build.prop v3 (160 LCD Density).
So far so good! The Scroll is still operational and appears slightly quicker/smoother in use, although would say it's a marginal improvement as oppose to an "OMG!" one!
Downloaded the files needed for the Market fix but hit a snag early on when trying to install the Android SDK in that it couldn't find the Java SDK apparently, even though I'd installed that first! More head-scratching but then came across a post that simply said on the screen that says the JDK can't be found, click the back button then the next button and it will magically find it, which it did!! Finished the SDK install but couple of issues getting a virtual Scroll system loaded so have left it for now and will try again tomorrow when my head feels clearer!
