Is it faulty or just a crap device?

Postby dominicporter » March 8th, 2011, 9:35 am

Hi All,

I have read the enthusiasm you all have for the scroll and since I got mine, I just can't see what is so good about it... Or perhaps mine is faulty, or perhaps I have not yet played with it enough to fully appreciate it yet. I bought it with the intention of replacing my grandmother's laptop as she really just uses Skype, email and web but struggles with the complexities of Windows. My initial findings:

* It will not connect to either of our wifi routers at work, despite that every phone/laptop I have had for the last 3 years will. It connects to my Vigor at home. It will not detect the wifi signal from my phone when using JoikuSpot to create a wireless tether.
* The touch screen is really painful. I expected it to be a bit hard as it is resistive but nearly every time I try to scroll down a list of things it opens one of them when I don't want it to. Maps seems to randomly jump from moving around to zooming when you drag across the screen.
* Skype won't run. OK so I should have seen the problems reported with this before buying but some people seem to have it going. What is the point of a tablet PC with camera and microphone that can't do skype calls? Again, I have had skype running, at least for chat, on every phone/PC I have had for the last 5 years.
* Several apps get the screen orientation wrong on some pages (eg Facebook, google sky map...).
* No flash or javascript so although you can view webpages and Facebook, pretty much any attachment/link won't work. It isn't even smart enough to open the Youtube app when you try to view a Youtube video.
* Many other apps won't run - they just seem to hang or return to the home screen.
* No official plans to update firmware or move to the latest version of Android. WTF? Again, phones, last 5 years etc.

I am expecting some abuse for criticising the device on this forum so bring it on! :)

The scroll does not support ad hoc wifi connections, hence no connection to your JoikuSpot wireless teather.
Resistive touchscreens take a little getting use to after using cpastive ona phone but the scrolls screen isnt that bad compared to some I have used.
Skype dosent work on a few devices I think there was a version that worked on teh scroll somwhere though but it was only 1 specific version or something... no idea dont use it...
Flipped screen is just gayness no idea why it does that.
Javascript you just have to enable. and there is no flash for 2.1? kinda been know for years... you can get flash lite (up to i think flash 7?) working quite easily...
Ap compatibilty effects all devices move on.
three are hundreds of tablets/hones that dont plan to update? I dont get why this is a problem I didnt update the firmware on my old nokia every 6 months why would I want to do it on my tablet? yes 2.2 would be nice and the community are working on it but until thn you paid for 2.1 you get 2.1? whats the issue? lol

Basically you paid for a cheap tablet I dont know what you expected? get a £400 tablet and you might get all tht you want but its £300 more than the scroll :)
