The chat system in question does have the ability to archive chat sessions, but dependant upon how much we actually wish to archive it could cause too many sql problems. It doesnt, however have the ability to auto-create posts directly from the chat window. You can, of course, cut and paste info into a post message..
I agree with Stu, problem solving should be our biggest concern and topics / threads would be better in this respect as easily accessible material.
Here's my main reasons for suggesting it:
- Quite often, people need urgent help (ie in the middle of flashing something and they get an error) or they would just like to chat in real time similar to msn, skype, aim, icq etc. This system gives them the ability to do so with added security in that they know the other person(s) they are talking to are registered forum members who are subject to the rules of the forum.
- With the above in mind, the chat system should only be used for general chat or urgent assistance if needed. Posts should still initially be put in the forum if a person requires help.
There is also, as Stu suggested, the problem of policing it. In my case, I will be able to see all messages (even archived ones) so I can check and deal with things if a problem is reported to me. I am, at present, testing the phobb swear filter system to see if it works on the mod in question.
UPDATE: The standard word censor works automatically with the chat system without any further coding.
